From the cult of bodybuilding popularised in the 1980s by icons such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky film series to Crossfit today, gyms have transformed in purpose and form. The current iteration of gym culture has spawned hashtags such as #fitgirls, #eatclean, #skinnyme, #shredded and #aesthetic accompanying ‘selfies’ of ‘fit’ physiques on social media.
As with art and other sub-cultures, gym culture is built on ambitions of utopias like athletic physiques that could unintentionally retrograde into an auto-dystopian reality of eating disorders. How do we make sense of ‘alternative’ habits that have become mainstream cultures? Athleticism once considered X-Games-worthy is now considered “normal”.
No Regrets For Our Youth is an artistic urban gymnasium by Singapore art collective DXXXXD. It confronts gym culture and its influence in personal as well as “tribe” image and association, having risen in popularity to become a bona fide urban sub-culture.
